Mission
We tell the world about the world

Our mission is to further the promotion of liberal democracy and the safeguarding of the environment by the actions of accountable governments. To advance this cause we report, without fear or favour, the affairs of nations that are in transition, their politics, economics, business, finance and human rights - and we tell it how it is, consistently, calmly, and objectively.

The real score?
Things are not always as they seem. It might appear that the strong man in Bulgaria is the undoubtedly tough former mayor of Sofia, the current PM, Boyko Borisov, who has set himself up as the foe of the gangsters that infest the body politic.

This is not the view, however, of Bulgaria's conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party’ leader, Yane Yanev. He has stated that Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov is currently the real Prime Minister of Bulgaria. He is certainly in the limelight as the scourge of the scoundrels, with his life on the line.

Yanev said February 11 that two thirds of the centre-right governing MPs are loyal to Tsvetanov and not Borisov. He added that Borisov “is experiencing nightmares involving Tsvetanov, he does not dare to oppose him or say anything bad about him.”

“We believe that the GERB party is a project of the Interior Ministry and the Bulgarian Communist Party and is the last political mutant of the criminal transition of Bulgaria. Boyko Borisov does not behave like a statesman or Prime Minister, but instead behaves as a ringleader of the crime groups,” Yanev added.

Yanev also refuted claims that the National Agency for State Security (DANS) had set up the RZS party. He concluded that GERB is scared of RZS because of the 200 000 Bulgarians who voted for it in last year’s elections.

Representatives of the Bulgarian conservative party “Order, Law, Justice” (RZS) earlier announced that they feel that they has been targeted by the Borisov government through the arrest of ex-secret agent Aleksei Petrov in the Octopus operation. Petrov is known to be close to RZS.

The London-Sofia axis
Prime Minister of the UK, Gordon Brown, has backed Bulgaria’s aspirations to join the Euro zone, in the words of his Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov.

Borisov met with Brown in London on February 8. After the meeting he said that Brown had valued highly the fact that the Bulgarian government is keeping its state budget deficit under 3%, which is a major Euro zone accession criterion.

“Prime Minister Brown told me that we deserved to join the Euro zone,” Borisov stated as cited by the BNR.

In his words, the British P.M. and he discussed opportunities for boosting UK investments in Bulgaria, mostly in the energy and tourism sectors.

“I posed the question about the access of Bulgarian labourers to the British labour market. Mr. Brown promised to actions in order to regulate this issue, and also promised that it would not become a matter of the campaigns before the upcoming Parliamentary elections,” Borisov stated.

He made it clear the UK authorities had agreed to look once again into the evidence on the murder of Bulgarian dissident writer Georgi Markov in 1978.

Other topics of the Borisov-Brown meeting were the bilateral cooperation in Afghanistan, and the British support for Bulgaria’s insistence to get EU action in order to resolve the issue with the border blockade imposed by protesting Greek farmers.
